TELESCOPIC MATERIALS HANDLERS - TMH1
Aims & Objectives
On completion of the course, the operators will know:

a) Their statutory duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
b) The machine identification, terminology and daily maintenance
c) The safety aspects relating to the usage of this type of machine including warning devices
d) The operational discipline of load movement to include the various attachment fittings i.e. buckets, platforms etc.

Module 1

Statutory Requirments


  • The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Section 2, General duties of employers
  • Section 7 & 8, General duties of employees
  • Powers of the Inspectorate
  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (an overview)
  • Safety Awareness Plant Operators

Module 2

Introduction to the Machine


  • Machine identification and terminology
  • Mono and telescopic booms
  • Routine daily maintenance
  • Automatic safe load indicator
  • Warning devices – safety valves
  • Start-up procedure
  • Close-down procedure
  • Machine stability
  • Tyre pressure
  • Tyre attachment
  • Access platform fittings
  • Load centers
  • Use of stabilizers if fitted

Module 3

Machine Operation (No Load)


  • Pre-start checks
  • Safe mounting machine and start-up
  • Safe traveling – reversing – maneuvering
  • Safe operation of boom: mono and telescopic
  • Safe traveling on rough terrain
  • Safe traveling on inclines
  • Close down procedures
